Smuggling

From level 20 you can run goods out of every city: boats from the harbours, trucks from Chicago's depot, planes from the desert and the hills. It's slow money that runs while you're away, and other players can come after it.

01 The short version

  • Smuggling opens at level 20. Every city smuggles its own way, and its crafts and money stay in that city.
  • Keep every craft busy. Each one you own is one run out at a time, and runs go on while you are offline.
  • Bring a guard on the big runs. A friend from your My Mafia fights with their own strength; a hired hand takes a cut.
  • Watch the heat. Every run heats up the craft that goes. Hot crafts get stopped by the patrols; at 100 they are burned.
  • Go after other players' runs with an offensive craft and a full crew, and take revenge when someone hits yours.

02 How a run works

Every day each city posts a board of 6 runs, the same for every player there. A run says what to carry, how many crates and where. Each one belongs to a district: you can take it once that district is open for you.

To send a run you need:

  • The goods. Buy them from the supplier, or find them on jobs (once smuggling is open, every energy you spend on a job has a small chance to turn some up). The supplier charges about 40% of what the run pays.
  • A craft with room for all the crates. The biggest runs need a cargo craft.
  • A skipper (a driver on the road, a pilot in the air): someone from your My Mafia, or a hired hand who takes 15% of what the run brings home.
  • A guard if you want one (shotgun on the road, a gunner in the air). They make a hijack harder. A hired guard takes 15% and fights at 60% of your own strength.

A run takes 2 to 12 hours, times the craft's speed (fast crafts take less). A Wheelman in your Top Mafia makes every run 10% shorter. When it's back, collect it for the cash and some XP.

What it pays follows your level: it's worked out from the best job in your newest district, so smuggling stays worth it as you grow. Longer runs and bigger cargoes pay more.

The same run again: a run can go out more than once a day, but each time it pays 80% of the time before, because the market fills up. After 4 times that district doesn't need any more until tomorrow. The goods get cheaper the same way, so a run never loses money.

03 Heat and the patrols

Every craft has its own heat. A run adds 25, a guard on board 15 more, and a hijack 20 to the craft you went with. Heat cools by 5 an hour.

From 30 heat the patrols (the coast guard, state troopers or air patrol) can stop a run: each point above that adds 0.5% to the chance, and when they stop you they take 20% to 40% of the cargo.

At 100 heat a craft is burned: the patrols know it, and it can't go out until it has cooled to 50. You can repaint it (new papers, heat back to 0) for 30% of its price, or scrap it for 20% back.

Rotate your crafts. Two cheap ones that take turns stay cooler than one big one that never rests.

04 Hijacks and revenge

Runs out at sea, on the road or in the air can be hijacked by other players. A hijack costs 3 stamina. You go with one of your crafts and the crew it has seats for; the other side defends with their craft, skipper and guard.

Crafts weigh in at 4× their attack and defense, so they count about as much as the crews, and a craft out on a run defends at 1.5× its defense. Win and you take 30% to 60% of the cargo: more for a clear win.

Got hit? For 24 hours you can go after the hijacker's runs whatever their level, with +15% on your odds.

Offensive crafts have the seats for a full crew: that is what you hijack with. Defensive crafts are the hardest to take.
