Games like Mafia Wars
Mafia Wars was the game everyone on Facebook seemed to be playing: spend your energy on jobs, master them, collect the loot, beat the boss and get your friends into your mafia. Zynga shut it down in June 2016. If you still miss it, these games scratch the same itch. They're all still running and free to start.
What made Mafia Wars so good
- Energy and jobs. A bar that refilled while you were away, and a list of jobs that paid a little better each time you levelled up.
- Mastery. Doing a job again and again until it was mastered, and the feeling of a district done.
- Your mafia. Friends made you stronger: more people to arm, gifts every day, help when you needed it.
- Bosses, loot and collections. Something to hunt for at the end of every job list.
- New cities. New York, then the world, each with its own jobs and its own money.
- Short visits. A few minutes when the bar was full, then back to your day.
The alternatives
1. Made Men: Mafia Empire RPG
The closest thing to Mafia Wars you can play today. We built it to be. Do energy jobs district by district, earn three stars on each, beat the district boss and move on: Miami, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Havana, New Orleans, Santiago, with new countries on the way.
Your My Mafia makes you stronger and sends you Energy Packs. There are fights and bounties, properties that earn while you're away, collections, families with their own chat, and a casino. What's new: contracts that send your crew out while you're offline, and rested energy that rewards you for coming back to a full bar.
Free in your browser, no Facebook needed. Play Made Men · Your first 30 levels
2. Mob Wars: La Cosa Nostra
From the same Facebook era as Mafia Wars and much the same idea: jobs, fights and a mob built from your friends. The Facebook version has closed, but the game lives on in the browser at KanoPlay and on mobile. kanoplay.com
3. Torn
A text-based crime RPG that's been running since the mid-2000s, with a huge community. Less of a job list and more of a sandbox: crimes, gyms, factions, travel, a stock market and players who will mug you. Deep, but a different kind of game. torn.com
4. Omerta
One of the oldest mafia games online. A text-based MMO about crimes, families and climbing the ranks against other players. Competitive and old-school. barafranca.com
5. The Mafia Boss
A free browser mafia game that's been running since 2005, right through Mafia Wars' rise and fall. Simple to start, all in the browser. themafiaboss.com
